A question for teachers

When you were a new teacher, did you solicit help from teachers at your school? Did you randomly pop into rooms asking for help or did you go to the teachers who reached out to you first? Do you feel like it’s the responsibility of a new teacher to go ask everyone for help?

  1. joycelyndiane answered: Yes, no one will know you need help if you dont ask, ask them once and if anyone is negative make a note not to go there again. I did it all
  2. wincherella answered: I was lucky enought to have a veteran teacher take me under her wing for the first couple of years I also spent lots of time asking question
  3. oliviaobryon answered: I ask for help all the time— but I also get offered a ton of help from my grade level team, so that makes it easier to ask… :)
  4. maevegreen answered: Dumped into my first assignment without a mentor, but my team teachers helped alot.Another new teach mistook me for a veteran hoping for help

  7. mgweng74 answered: It’s both. New teachers are usually assigned a mentor teacher but the new teacher should also be proactive in seeking help from the team.

  9. jacizzle answered: I did both. Some was helpful, some was not. You will work out who understands you and who can help.
  10. thecomababies answered: agreed, at the very least they need to feel welcome and able to ask for help.
  11. matchforthousands answered: yes, i asked help and asked tons of questions to the “older” teacher in the school… its better to ask a loot tan to look like a fool doing

I’d really like to know your answers, too!
  16. misseducation answered: I was new and did not ask so many questions, but I should have. I would really like to see people’s answers to this, too!
  17. windycitylibrarian answered: I shared a room so I asked my “roomie” for help. I have no problems asking for help when I need it, even now, as a 1st year librarian.
  18. mrskaaay answered: I did ask for help. Usually from teachers reached out, sometimes from teacher w/ relationships w/ students i needed help to help
  19. tomesaway answered: I never asked for help. Not that I didn’t need it (I definitely did at first), but I was stubborn and wanted to figure things out on my own.
  20. ursoteachable answered: I was too shy to ask. So now I always go out of my way to share ideas with new teachers. I am empathetic, I remember my first year. :-)
  21. incognerdo answered: I am HUGE on going to ask for help, even after teaching for three years. I find out who taught the class and pick their brains.
